Ngāi Tahu uses Mātauranga Māori and creation stories in conjunction with scientific knowledge to increase earthquake preparedness. A magnitude 8+ Alpine Fault earthquake is highly likely within the next 50 years, potentially causing widespread damage across South Island. The AF8 Programme and Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu are combining storytelling and scientific modeling to educate communities about the potential impacts of such an event.
