Garda Commissioner Drew Harris welcomed 165 new officers during an attestation ceremony, expressing hope to reach a target of 15,000 officers. The latest recruits, including those aged between 35 and 49, bring the total Garda numbers to 14,091. In an attempt to boost numbers, the Irish government has increased the Garda entry age limit from 35 to 50 and plans to allocate €2.3 billion to An Garda Síochána in Budget 2024, allowing for the continued recruitment of between 800 and 1,000 Garda members.
