Former President John Mahama accused the current Akufo-Addo government of causing the near collapse of Ghana's National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), claiming the government is not funding the scheme. As a result, hospitals are forced to charge patients directly or offer only basic services. If Mahama's next administration wins in 2024, he promises to revamp the NHIS to restore its originally intended services.
