EU Parliament passes weaker pollution reduction rules for livestock farms, excluding intensive cattle farming; legislation awaits EU member state approval.

The EU Parliament has passed a weakened version of pollution reduction rules for livestock farms, agreeing to make the law less stringent than initially planned. The new rules will tighten limits for farms and factories on waste disposal and polluting gases, with the aim of reducing environmental damage. However, intensive cattle farming will be excluded from the legislation, with the European Commission tasked to assess emissions from the sector by 2026. The law now requires final approval from EU member states before it can come into effect.
