Prisons and Probation Ombudsman launches investigation into abuse at Medomsley Detention Centre (1961-1987) and authorities' knowledge.

A new investigation has been launched by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) into what authorities knew about the large-scale abuse at Medomsley Detention Centre in Co Durham, previously exposed by the Daily Mirror. The inquiry will examine the authorities' awareness and actions from the facility's opening in 1961 to its closure in 1987, involving over 1,800 men who reported physical or sexual abuse during the 1970s and 1980s. The PPO aims to uncover the truth behind the abuse and why it continued for so long.
