Report uncovers severe overcrowding, high self-harm rates, and dangerous violence at HMP Wandsworth, prompting a £100m investment from MoJ for improvements.

A new HM Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) report reveals "shocking" chaos at HMP Wandsworth, highlighting severe overcrowding, high self-harm rates, and dangerous levels of violence. With a designed capacity for 979 men, the prison housed 1,521 at the time of inspection, causing over 80% of inmates to share cells intended for one person. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has deployed extra specialist staff and reallocated £100 million over five years to address the issues, including new leadership, advanced violent reduction training sessions, and beefed-up drug searches.
