Boliden CEO warns Tara Mines in Ireland, closed due to low zinc prices and high energy costs, may permanently shut if a profitable reopening plan isn't developed.

Tara Mines, owned by Boliden, may be forced to close permanently if it cannot reopen on a profitable basis, according to Boliden's CEO, Mikael Staffas. The mine has been under care and maintenance since summer 2023 due to unprofitability caused by falling global zinc prices and increased energy costs, leading to a €65m loss in 2023. Talks with unions are ongoing to discuss a rescue plan for the Co Meath zinc mine, and Boliden is spending €1m a week to keep the mine in stasis.
