Tesco introduces seedless hybrid citrus fruits in response to drop in satsuma production due to clementine market preference.

Tesco, a major UK supermarket, is introducing a new line of hybrid easy-peeler citrus fruits in response to the decline in satsuma production. The European market's preference for seeded clementines has led Spanish and Moroccan growers to reduce satsuma production. Tesco has partnered with these growers to develop mandarin hybrids with fewer seeds. These new varieties, including Meiravit, Havva, Orit, and Sigal, offer longer shelf life, fewer seeds, and resistance to early season greening, while possessing a vibrant color and stronger aroma. Tesco anticipates that these hybrids could replace clementines entirely within the next decade.
