Two deputy-involved shootings in Greenville and Barry Counties are under investigation after suspects, armed at the time, were killed.

On December 28, a Greenville County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed 66-year-old Joseph Dominic Mason after responding to a call about a suicidal person. Mason was armed and refused to drop his weapon, leading the deputy to use deadly force, which is said to be justified under the department's policy. In a separate incident, the Barry County Prosecutor ruled a deputy's shooting of Jeremiah Jacob Johnson in October as justifiable, as Johnson had drawn a firearm during a domestic disturbance. Both cases are under investigation by state agencies.
