Illinois enacts law requiring dealers to track catalytic converter purchases to curb theft.

Illinois has passed a new law, HB4589, to combat high rates of catalytic converter theft. Effective January 1, 2025, recyclable metal dealers must use an electronic record-keeping system for each purchase, recording the seller's identity and proof of vehicle ownership. This move aims to make it harder for thieves to sell stolen converters. Auto parts businesses are advised to prepare for these changes.
