Turkey intercepted over 55,000 migrants heading to Europe in 2024, a sharp rise from the prior year.

In 2024, Turkey intercepted 55,726 illegal immigrants trying to reach Europe via its seas, marking a significant rise in irregular migration incidents to 2,011, up from 169 the previous year. The Turkish Coast Guard also reported 45 migrant deaths, mostly due to drowning, and the arrest of 484 human traffickers. Turkey currently hosts over 4 million migrants, mainly Syrians.
