Over 10,000 migrants died or went missing trying to reach Spain by sea in 2024, a record high.

In 2024, over 10,000 migrants died or went missing while attempting to reach Spain by sea, marking a 58% increase from the previous year and the highest number since records began in 2007. The Atlantic route to the Canary Islands was notably dangerous, with 9,757 deaths recorded. The NGO Caminando Fronteras attributes the surge in deaths to the use of flimsy boats, dangerous routes, and insufficient rescue resources. The report also notes that over 57,700 migrants reached Spain by boat, a 12% increase from 2023.
