Record migrant arrivals in Spain's Canary Islands surge, with over 46,000 in 2024, despite EU drops.

In 2024, a record 46,843 migrants arrived in Spain's Canary Islands via the dangerous Atlantic route, marking the second year of high numbers. Spain saw a total of 63,970 irregular migrants, up from 56,852 in 2023. Despite a 40% drop in overall EU irregular crossings from January to November 2024, the Atlantic route saw a 19% increase. At least 10,457 migrants died or disappeared trying to reach Spain, a 50% rise from 2023. The surge has strained Canary Island resources, prompting calls for national assistance.
