Study finds 300 large and 190,000 small marine protected areas needed to reach 30% UN COP15 ocean protection goal by 2030.

A study by Dynamic Planet and National Geographic Pristine Seas indicates that to meet the UN's COP15 goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030, 300 large and 190,000 small marine protected areas (MPAs) must be established. Currently, only 8.2% of the ocean is protected, with 3% highly protected. Effective management of these areas could enhance food security, support jobs, and generate economic benefits. Key nations must significantly contribute to this initiative.
