China's Colombo Port City project in Sri Lanka has unexpectedly become a thriving underwater coral garden.

China's Colombo Port City project in Sri Lanka, part of the Belt and Road Initiative, has transformed a coastal area into a thriving underwater garden with corals and marine life. The 3.7-km breakwater's unique stepped structure has facilitated coral growth, improving the marine ecosystem. Since 2024, the project has added 68 coral nurseries and over 5,000 coral plants, along with organizing conservation activities, aiming to protect Sri Lanka's marine biodiversity.
