A UK trial uses a "sponge on a string" test to detect early signs of oesophageal cancer in 120,000 people.

A new trial called Best4, funded by Cancer Research UK, aims to prevent oesophageal cancer deaths by using a "sponge on a string" test. Participants, mainly those with chronic heartburn, swallow a pill containing a sponge that collects oesophagus cells to detect Barrett's oesophagus, a condition increasing cancer risk. The trial, involving 120,000 people, could lead to earlier detection and prevention, potentially saving lives.
