University of Birmingham researchers develop flavored lollipops with smart hydrogel to non-invasively diagnose mouth cancer.

University of Birmingham researchers are developing flavored lollipops containing a smart hydrogel that could help diagnose mouth cancer without invasive methods like biopsies or endoscopy procedures. The hydrogel "net" in the lollipop can "catch" proteins in saliva that could be biomarkers of cancer. The £350,000 funded project aims to create a device that is kinder for patients and easier for GPs to use, potentially replacing invasive and time-consuming diagnostic procedures.
