Clifton R. Wharton Jr., the first Black president of a major U.S. research university, has passed away at 98. He led Michigan State University from 1970 to 1978, overseeing significant advancements including the construction of the Wharton Center for Performing Arts. Post-MSU, Wharton became the first Black CEO of a Fortune 500 company and served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of State under President Clinton.
