GHGSat reports a rise in global methane emissions, identifying 20,000 "super-emitting" sites.

GHGSat CEO Stephane Germain reported a significant increase in global methane emissions from oil and gas equipment, coal mines, and landfills, highlighting that current documentation is inadequate. In late 2023, the company identified around 20,000 "super-emitting" sites, up from 15,000 the previous year. Nearly half of these emissions stem from the oil and gas sector, with substantial contributions from waste management and mining. North America and Eurasia are the largest sources, particularly Canadian landfills.
