2023 methane emissions from the energy sector remained near a record high despite commitments from the sector to reduce leaks, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Methane emissions from oil and natural gas production, agriculture, and landfills rose slightly in 2022 and large methane plumes from leaky fossil fuel infrastructure increased by 50% in 2023 compared with 2022. Despite commitments made by over 150 countries since 2021 to reduce global methane emissions by at least 30% from 2020 levels by the end of this decade, 2024 is expected to mark a turning point in action and transparency on methane due to the MethaneSAT satellite.
