10% of Japan's elderly to lack close relatives, raising healthcare and asset management concerns.

A survey by the Japan Research Institute predicts that by 2050, over 10% of Japan's elderly population (65+) will lack close relatives, totaling around 4.48 million individuals. This increase raises serious concerns about who will serve as guarantors for healthcare and manage the deceased's affairs, as Japan's Civil Code mandates support from third-degree relatives. Additionally, the number of elderly needing long-term care is expected to rise from 340,000 to 590,000.
