3 new ancestors of Tasmanian tiger (thylacine) identified in Queensland's Riversleigh site fossils.
Paleontologists in Sydney have identified three new ancestors of the Tasmanian tiger, or thylacine, from 23-25 million-year-old jaw fossils found in Queensland's Riversleigh site. The newly named species—Badjcinus timfaulkneri, Nimbacinus peterbridgei, and Ngamalacinus nigelmarveni—shed light on thylacine evolution and diet. This discovery supports ongoing efforts to resurrect the extinct marsupial, which last existed in the 1930s.
