Taiwanese activist Yang Chih-yuan has been sentenced to nine years in prison by a Chinese court for "separatism," the first such case against a Taiwanese individual. Yang was convicted for promoting Taiwan's independence and advocating for its UN membership. Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council condemned the ruling as lacking evidence and intended to intimidate Taiwanese citizens, amid escalating tensions between Beijing and Taipei under President Lai Ching-te.
