Swedish researchers find that older students more commonly use AI chatbots for academic support, especially those with attention difficulties.

Swedish researchers at Lund University published a study in Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence suggesting that generative AI tools, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, are popular among students with attention difficulties. The study involved two investigations with a total of 844 teenagers aged 12 to 19. It found that older students (53%) used AI chatbots more than younger students (15%), and the tools were particularly useful for students struggling with cognitive processes vital for academic success. The study's findings aim to inform educators, policymakers, and technology developers about the role of AI in education and its balance with academic integrity, but further studies are needed due to limitations such as self-reported data and limited generalization.
