Victoria University of Wellington hosted a series of seminars, "Poverty, by Design," examining NZ's poverty systems and potential changes. The final seminar, "A Decade of Debt," on Aug 28, featured Jake Lilley, a senior policy advisor at FinCap, who discussed 2014 policy changes that turned Work and Income's system into a large-scale debt collection mechanism. He also highlighted how government debt collection undermines benefit incomes and suggested recommendations by FinCap to address these poverty drivers. The seminars, organized by journalist and author Rebecca Macfie, aim to foster understanding of systems perpetuating poverty in NZ and encourage equitable redesign.
