In 2022, South Korea reported a 79% increase in malaria cases from the previous year, with an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes at the heavily fortified border, the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Both countries remain technically at war and there are no current plans for cooperation in mitigating the spread of malaria.
