Cambodia reports near-elimination of malaria, with only 355 cases in 2024 versus 170,000 in 1997.

Cambodia is close to eradicating malaria, reporting only 355 cases last year compared to 170,000 in 1997. The country aims to eliminate all cases by 2025, with a national action plan launched in 2011. If no cases are reported this year and for the next three years, Cambodia could be certified malaria-free by the World Health Organization. The progress is attributed to the efforts of scientist Yeang Chheang, who rebuilt the malaria control program after the Khmer Rouge era.
