15,000 endangered mussels are being relocated in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as part of a scaled-back river restoration project to improve the ecosystem. The $79m Grand River Mussel Relocation Project aims to minimize impacts on the endangered mussels, with divers and biologists relocating them from August to October, before anticipated river construction in 2025. The project, involving the City of Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids Whitewater, plans to remove four dams and place rocks and boulders in the river, restoring whitewater rapids and boosting tourism, recreation, and development.
