1-2 cigarettes a day during or before pregnancy can lead to serious health problems in newborns, according to a study published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health. Even light smoking is unsafe, increasing risks of preterm birth, low birth weight, restricted infant growth, and death. Women who stopped smoking during pregnancy still faced higher risks of poor neonatal outcomes compared to non-smokers.
