2024 NZ Whitebait Season: DOC Urgently Promotes Safety, Biosecurity. New Zealand's Department of Conservation (DOC) urges whitebaiters to prioritize safety and environmental protection during the 1 September to 30 October season. Between 2019-23, four drowning incidents occurred while whitebaiting, with none wearing lifejackets. Biosecurity is also important, with four out of six whitebait species threatened or at risk of extinction; DOC recommends following the Check, Clean, Dry advice from Biosecurity New Zealand and limiting fishing to one river in the Waikato region.
