5th Offshore Wind Leasing Round advances to develop 4.5GW floating wind farms in Celtic Sea, UK, with grid connections planned.

The UK's Offshore Wind Leasing Round 5 has progressed to its second phase, with the aim to develop 4.5GW of floating wind farms in the Celtic Sea, off the coasts of South Wales and South West England. The National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) has released a recommended design for connecting these projects to the grid, involving two high voltage direct current (HVDC) connections to South Wales and one to the South West of England, using high voltage alternating current (HVAC) technologies. This approach allows developers to make more informed bids and streamlines the connection contract process. The Crown Estate expects to award Agreements for Lease in summer 2025, with the aim of contributing to the UK's green industrial goals and supporting the government's target for clean power by 2030.
