16,000 fewer top A-level A* and A grades may be awarded this year due to efforts to restore pre-pandemic grading.

16,000 fewer top A-level grades, A* and A, may be awarded this year due to efforts to restore pre-pandemic grading, according to Professor Alan Smithers from the University of Buckingham. The drop is expected to be "proportionally greater" in Wales and Northern Ireland. Last year, 27.2% of UK A-level entries were awarded an A or A* grade, down by 9.2 percentage points on 2022 when 36.4% achieved the top grades.
