2021/22 UK students increasingly focus on STEM subjects, with single-subject group proportions rising from 21% to 35% since 2015/16.

A report by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) reveals that students in the UK are increasingly concentrating on one group of subjects, such as STEM, and ignoring other subjects like humanities, languages, and arts. Between 2015/16 and 2021/22, the proportion of students taking AS or A-levels from a single subject group increased from 21% to 35%. The decline in humanities and arts subjects may have knock-on effects for universities and the skills young people take into the workforce.
