Australian craft brewers face increased beer prices due to alcohol excise tax hike, leading to higher taxes on pints and cases.
Australian craft brewers are facing increased beer prices due to a rise in alcohol excise tax, which increased on July 31 and led to tax on a pint raising a few cents from August 5. The tax on a case of beer has increased by up to $2. The Brewers Association CEO, John Preston, said the tax has risen twice a year for over 30 years, making Australia have the third-highest beer tax globally. Craft breweries contribute $1.93bn annually to the economy and employ over 10,000 people. The industry is advocating for a reduction in the tax rate for beers served in hospitality venues and an increase in the rebate for craft breweries to create a more level playing field.
