Australian beer and spirit prices rise due to alcohol tax increase, affecting independent brewers.

As of February 5, Australian drinkers will experience an increase in the cost of beer and spirits due to a rise in alcohol taxes. The tax, which is the third-highest in the world, is indexed twice a year based on household inflation, and the added cost combined with recent economic challenges has become increasingly burdensome for independent brewers. The chairman of the Independent Brewers Association, Richard Watkins, stated that the beer tax has increased by nearly 8% in the past three to five years, making it difficult for local brewers to compete with overseas-owned producers.
