9th-century BC underground city Matiate, spanning 900,000 sqm and 50 subterranean rooms, discovered in southeastern Turkey.

Archaeologists discovered a vast underground city in southeastern Turkey, possibly the largest in the country, dating back to the 9th century BC. Known as Matiate, the city spans an estimated 900,000 square meters and has over 50 subterranean rooms connected by a 120-meter tunnel. The ancient city may have served as a refuge from harsh climates, enemies, predators, and diseases. The Midyat municipality plans to continue excavations with the aim of opening the site to the public as a popular tourist attraction.
