Meteorologist Jiwon Park from the Bureau of Meteorology explained these clouds formed due to north-westerly winds ahead of a cold front interacting with the Snowy Mountains, creating mountain waves. While mountain waves are common in the area, the specific cloud shape and extent are less frequent.
