NSW government's brumby rehoming program linked to deaths of over 250 horses at an alleged illegal slaughterhouse, leading to program suspension.

An investigation of the NSW government's brumby rehoming program found significant program failures were linked to the deaths of over 250 horses at an alleged illegal slaughterhouse. The program, which aimed to reduce wild horse numbers in Kosciuszko National Park, was suspended when over 500 horse carcasses were discovered at a property near Wagga Wagga in April. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water found the agency responsible for the NPWS failed to properly manage the program.
