Landfill gas in Florida contains high levels of airborne PFAS from decomposing organic matter.

New research finds that landfill gas 'burps' from decomposing organic matter at three sites in Florida contain high levels of airborne PFAS, including fluorotelomer alcohols. Municipal landfills often release these gases, primarily composed of methane, untreated into the environment. The study suggests that vented gases and liquid by-products called leachates could transport similar amounts of PFAS contaminants, which are also found in some consumer products and commercial waste.
