DOC and Ngāi Tai Ki Tāmaki intensify rat eradication efforts on Motutapu Island ahead of endangered species nesting season.

DOC and Ngāi Tai Ki Tāmaki intensify rat eradication efforts on pest-free Motutapu Island as nesting season nears for endangered species like tūturuatu/shore plover, takahē, and Coromandel brown kiwi. After a rat was spotted in late April, DOC has adopted a strategy of placing toxic bait brodifacoum in discreet locations around the island. Aucklanders are encouraged to check their vessels and gear for rats before departure and set traps or bait stations to help keep island ecosystems pest-free.
