New Zealand's DoC spent NZ$500,000 over 8 months to kill a single stoat on predator-free Chalky Island.
New Zealand's Department of Conservation (DoC) spent around NZ$500,000 on an operation to kill a single stoat on predator-free Chalky Island, which took eight months. The island, home to endangered species like kākāpō chicks, Te Kākahu skinks, and little spotted kiwi chicks, had its stoat population identified in August 2022. The operation costs included incident management team expenses, staff time, dog handlers, and transportation expenses. Auckland University's Professor of Conservation Biology, James Russell, supported the DoC's decision to spend the money on stoat eradication, emphasizing the need for investments in predator-free initiatives for New Zealand.
