DOC initiates rodent control on pest-free Te Haupa Island after mammal footprint report.
DOC's full-scale response to a pest invasion on 4.5 ha pest-free Te Haupa Island began after a public report of mammalian footprints. Located near Mahurangi East Peninsula, the island is a Ngāti Paoa Treaty Settlement site. Rodent detection dogs led handlers to a Norway rat burrow, prompting DOC to set traps and tracking tunnels. Two rats have been caught and traps will continue to be regularly reset and checked until DOC is satisfied there are no more rodents.
