80 residents in Essen, Germany were evacuated after an 8-story building above a disused coal mining tunnel was deemed unsafe due to an insufficiently filled-in ventilation opening. The Ruhr region has thousands of kilometers of mine shafts and tunnels, which can cause occasional building collapses and sinkholes. Residents may not return for weeks as a specialist company fills the tunnel with concrete.
