Researchers discover ancient termite mounds (heuweltjies) in South Africa's Namaqualand region, dating back thousands of years.

Researchers discover the world's oldest termite mounds in South Africa's Namaqualand region. These heuweltjies, also known as "little hills," occupy about 20% of the area's surface and house the southern harvester termite, Microhodotermes viator. The team of earth scientists used radiocarbon dating to study groundwater salinity in the region and found that the heuweltjies have stored precious carbon for thousands of years.
