1821-1835 South African San rock art may depict extinct dicynodonts, predating scientific descriptions by a decade.

A study in PLOS ONE suggests that rock art from the San people in South Africa, created between 1821 and 1835, may depict an extinct animal called a dicynodont. The artwork features a long-bodied creature with downward-turned tusks, resembling fossils found in the region. This finding indicates that the San integrated fossilized remains into their cultural expression, predating scientific descriptions of dicynodonts by at least ten years.
