180,000 African great apes face risk due to minerals mining for clean energy, states a Science Advances study.

180,000 gorillas, bonobos, and chimpanzees in Africa are at risk due to mining activities for minerals crucial to the global clean energy transition, according to a study published in Science Advances. High-density areas of great apes significantly overlap with locations of African mines for these minerals, putting one-third of all remaining apes in Africa at risk. The true impact of mining on biodiversity and great apes might be even higher, as mining companies are not required to make biodiversity data public.
