70-year-old former police officer Robert Cecil Atkinson was jailed for 12 months after admitting to conspiring to cover up a phone call he made to the home of a murder suspect within hours of the 1997 sectarian killing of Robert Hamill in Portadown, Co Armagh. Atkinson, a retired RUC Reserve Constable, was accused of failing to intervene when Hamill was beaten by loyalists. The public inquiry into Hamill's death has not been made public, and his family has called for its release.
