2022 and 2023 marked the first reported cases of a diphtheria-like bacterial infection transmitted between humans and pets in the US. The Corynebacterium ulceran bacterium, found in humans and pets in Utah and Colorado, can cause respiratory illnesses. Though similar to diphtheria, it responds to antibiotic treatment. This bacterium is considered harmful to livestock and wildlife, and experts are now alert to its potential spread between people and pets.
