NASA's Webb Space Telescope discovers abundant hydrocarbons in the protoplanetary disk around a low-mass star, shedding light on terrestrial planet formation.
NASA's Webb Space Telescope discovers abundant hydrocarbons in the protoplanetary disk surrounding a young, very low-mass star, providing new insights into the chemical environment from which many terrestrial planets are born. JWST observations of the disk around ISO-ChaI 147, a 0.11-solar-mass star in the Chameleon I star-forming region, reveal carbon-rich conditions with no evidence of water vapor, shedding light on the formation of rocky planets around low-mass stars.
