Minnesota's CRU recommends exonerating Brian Pippitt for 1998 murder conviction due to flawed tactics and evidence.

Minnesota's Conviction Review Unit (CRU) has recommended the exoneration of Brian Pippitt, who has been serving a life sentence for the 1998 murder of 84-year-old storekeeper Evelyn Malin. The CRU found that prosecutors used flawed legal tactics and unreliable evidence to secure Pippitt's conviction. Pippitt's attorneys have filed a petition for post-conviction release in Aitkin County District Court, requesting that Pippitt's conviction be vacated and the charges against him dismissed. This marks the first time the special unit has recommended the full exoneration of an incarcerated person.
